Tory Lanez's lawyers file opening brief in appeal of Megan Thee Stallion shooting convictions
Lawyers for rapper Tory Lanez have filed their opening brief in his appeal of his convictions for shooting Megan Thee Stallion.
You can read the full document here.
The arguments largely match arguments made in his motion for new trial that Los Angeles County Superior Court Judge David Herriford rejected in May.
The filing builds on a habeas petition filed in December with a declaration from Lanez’s driver that says he saw Lanez try to take a gun away from Megan’s friend Kelsey Harris before the shooting occurred, but it also says the driver did not see who fired the shots.
Judge Herriford in August sentenced Lanez, legal name Daystar Peterson, to 10 years in prison, with credit for time already served in jail and on house arrest. He’s currently at the California Correctional Institution in Tehachapi, and his earliest possible parole hearing is in September 2029.
I’ll have another article on the filing next week. The next step is for the California Attorney General’s Office to respond, then Lanez’s attorneys can reply.
The response brief currently is due on March 27.
The appeal is with the 2nd District Court of Appeal in Los Angeles, which may not do anything with it until next year.
